Seaman Second Class Charles Walter Roof, Jr was born on August 26, 1927 to parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walter Roof, Sr.
Charles Jr. went aboard USS Indianapolis CA-35 on May 12, 1945 just weeks before the ship's departure on July 16, 1945 for the fateful sinking on July 30, 1945.
The families of State of Michigan sailors who were Lost at Sea contributed to the manufacture of a Memorial Plaque that was planned for placement at a proposed Detroit Civic Center building.
Charles Walter Roof, Sr. (LAS Roof, Jr.'s father) was the LAS Family's representative who presented the Memorial Plaque to the Chairman of the Plaque Committee. The Chairman represented the Detroit Naval Post VFW #233.
