Letters from Lost at Sea Families to Charles B. McVay III
Captain USS Indianapolis (CA-35)
Letter to McVayCaptain McVay's Letter in Response

Thorpe, Everett N.

Oct 14 - 45

Dear Mr. Chas. B. McVay, III
Captain, U. S. Navy
I was indeed sorry to hear about the U.S.S. Indianapolis sinking but have been so grieved about my son Everett I can hardly stand it. I'm thankful he was a Christian and his bro that got killed in Germany or France Dec 16 was also a Christian and I have hopes of seeing them again in a better world.
The reason I'm bothering you to write this letter I would like to know all about how many stars he had and what other information you could give me.
I would like to have some kind of a book about the Indianapolis if there is one I could get.
Thank you for writing.

Yours Truly
(Everetts mother) Mrs. Grace T. Thorpe

My dear Mrs. Thorpe,

Your letter of October 14, 1945, concerning your son, Everett, reached me today.

While aboard the U.S.S. INDIANAPOLIS your son participated in the following:

Bombardment, support, and occupation of Saipan, Guam, and Tinian Islands, Marianas Island, from June 11, 1944 to August 10, 1944.

Bombardment, support, and occupation of the Palau Islands from September 12, 1944, to September 29, 1944.

Assault, bombardment and occupation of Iwo Jima commencing February 19, 1945.

Okinawa Gunto Operation - March 18, 1945 - April 7, 1945.

For the above he is entitled to the American Area Service Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Ribbon with four stars.

I am sorry to say I know of no book that has been published about the INDIANAPOLIS, but I am sending you the picture of the ship which you requested.

I am greatly grieved to learn that this war has taken two of your sons. It is indeed hard to overcome the sorrow which must fill your heart.

Again may I express my heartfelt sympathy.

Very sincerely,

CHAS. B. McVAY, III
Captain, U. S. Navy
