Rec 27 October handwritten note
Capt. Charles B, McCay
Dear Sir:
Can you give me any information whatever about Frederick Robert Stanturf MM 2/c - - #8657399
who was aboard the USS Indianapolis on July 30th.
He was in the back aft engine room and one of the other men from that engine room was reported wounded.
Do you think it is possible he is safe.
Any efforts will be greatly appreciated by his wife,
Mrs Fred Stanturf

P.S. please let me hear in form of letter or wire as soon as possible

My dear Mrs. Stanturf,
Your letter of August 15th concerning your husband, Frederick Robert Stanturf, Machinist's Mate second class, United States Naval Reserve, has just reached me here in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, where I have been on temporary duty since my return from Guam the middle of last month.
I regret that I can add nothing to my letter of September 27th, which I trust reached you after your letter to me was written.
It is difficult I know for you to understand why we can not furnish more information. However, when it is realized the ship sank in the middle of the night in a very short time and that no records whatsoever were saved that may explain our difficulty in piecing together a coherent story.
May I again express my heartfelt sympathy.
Very sincerely,
CHAS. B. MCVAY, III
