August 16th
Dear Sir
Recently I received a telegram from the war department, informing me that my husband is missing in action.
Since then, the radio and newspapers have been giving detailed reports on the sinking of the ship.
Chaplain Parkinson of the Grant Building, here in San Francisco, advised me to write you. He said you
could give me more help than anyone else.
My husband is William Goff Rue, MM 1/c, serial 6509197.
He was in the after engine room. I have had telegrams from several of his buddies' wives, telling me their
husbands are missing also. Perhaps there is some chance they were picked up by other ships.
If you can find some information for me about him, I would be greatly indebted to you. I know you must
be terribly overworked at this time, but if you can help me, I would be grateful.
Sincerely yours,
Isabelle Rue

Dear Mrs Rue:
As the Chaplain is missing in action I have taken it upon myself to reply to your inquiry about your
husband, William Goff Rue, MM1 1/c.
It is with regret that I inform you that your husband is not among the survivors and is missing in action. I cannot hold out much hope for his survival as I believe all survivors are known at this time. His shipmates and I share with you, your grief and sorrow.
If any new information becomes available, it will be passed on to you by the Navy department.
Very sincerely yours
John Reid
