Dear Sir

I am Joe Berry Jr Mother and I read in the paper where the Indianapolis Ship sunk July 16 or 30 and he Joseph Berry was on that ship The last time I received a letter from him which was dated July 15 I would be very glad to know if he was safe or missing as I haven't got any message from no one since the ship was sunk I am anxious to heard what happen to him and I would thank you very much is you would send me word of some kind he safe or not I would like to know whether he safe or not I would like to know soon if it possible than a lot    Your Very Truly

Dear Mrs. Mason:

I have received your letter and it is with regret that I to inform you that your son, Joseph Berry, is not among the survivors and is missing in action. I cannot hold out such hope for his survival as I believe he went down with his ship. His shipmates and I share with you your grief and sorrow.

If any new information becomes available to the Navy Department I feel certain that it will be passed on to you by that Department.
