Dear Captain:

My wife's cousin, Lt. (jg) Nelson Page Hill, a communications officer aboard your ship, has been reported missing in action. My wife and Lt. Hill were reared together and the family ties are very close. Naturally she wants to know as much as possible about what happened to Page.

I realize you are extremely busy at this time, but I would greatly appreciate any information which you could give us as to the circumstances in which Lt. Hill was lost and as to the possibility he may be alive. We should also appreciate hearing from any of his fellow communications officers and the chaplain if you would be good enough to pass the word along.

In case any of the officers from the ship are from the vicinity of Seattle and are coming home on leave, I should like very much to have their names and addresses in order that I might look them up while they are here.

Sincerely yours,
Braxton B. Caw
Lieutenant, USNR

I have received your letter and it is with regret that I have to inform you that, Lieutenant (jg) Nelson Page Hill, is missing in action. I cannot hold out much hope for his survival as I believe he went down with his ship.

Sincerely,
