My dear Mrs. Shimel,

Your letter of August 16th concerning Erwin Samuel Glovka, Seaman second class, United States Naval Reserve, has just reached me here in the Bureau of Naval Personnel where I have been on temporary duty since my return from Guam the middle of last month.
I regret to inform you that Erwin Glovka is not among the survivors.
May I express my heartfelt sympathy to you in what I know is a great loss.

Very sincerely,
CHAS. B. McVay, III
