Letters from Lost at Sea Families to Charles B. McVay III
Captain USS Indianapolis (CA-35)
Letter to Survivor GroupSurvivor Group's Letter in Response

Glaub, Francis A, GM2c

Aug 13, 1945.

Dear Father:

No doubt you receive many letters like the one which I am about to write. I don't know whether you can give us any information, but. You are our only hope. We went to the Red Cross but they couldn't do anything.

We received a telegram that my brother is missing in action since July 30th. I said he was still in San Francisco on July 15th. So can't believe that the ship could have reached the battle area in 15 days from then & of course all we can think of is that he fell on board or something like that.

The doctors are greatly worried about my mother's health and my father has been ill for a number of years now. The shock has caused a terrible relapse in his condition.

I am doing my best to carry this cross which God has sent me. My brother and I are exceptionally close. I am four years older than him and the shock has been a terrible blow to me, but I've got to try and keep from going to pieces because of my mother & father.

If you are not permitted to tell or don't know what happened, could you tell me where I could get some information about when he was first missed & under what circumstances?

My brother's name is Francis A Glaub Gm2/c Division 1.

Please say a prayer for my brother & I shall include you & your safety in mine.

Respectfully.

Katherine F. Glaub

PS. I know you will understand that I am so upset and it is almost impossible for me to write this letter & that is why it may sound so mixed up.
