My dear Mrs. Anthony:
Additional information has come to light of the manner in which your son, Harold Robert Anthony, Pharmacist's Mate third class, USNR, met his death. I regret that I did not have this information sooner.
Harold was with a group of approximately one hundred forty-five men and five officers in the water, many of whom were injured and required medical attention. Being the only Pharmacist's Mate in this group he worked unceasingly by administering first aid and thus saved the lives of many of his shipmates. Even after it was evident that he could not put forth this effort any long he did not spare himself, he continued to swim about doing whatever he could to help the others. After becoming completely exhausted he died peacefully in his sleep. He received a Christian burial at sea.
He gave his life so others might live. When men of this caliber are lost their loved ones and the Navy do indeed suffer a great loss.
In closing, may we, the survivors, again express our deepest sympathies.
Very Sincerely,
CHAS. B. McVay, III
Captain, U. S. Navy
