John Julian CADWALLADER, RT3-Radio Technician Third Class

CADWALLADER, John J
John Julian Cadwallader was born November 23, 1931, and lived in Chicago, Illinois. John chose to enlist at age 30 primarily because he felt guilty about not contributing to the war effort.
He left home on July 4, 1945, and joined the crew of USS Indianapolis in San Francisco, leaving behind his wife, four year old son, and 18 month old daughter. Within six weeks of leaving, John died a hero and left an indelible print on the Cadwallader legacy. In a letter he sent home, John mentioned befriending Herbert J. Miner, RT2. Miner survived the ordeal and proved to be a wonderful friend to John’s family after he returned. After losing her husband, his wife returned to school and graduated with a Master's Degree in Music from Northwestern University. His daughter Donna later graduated from Vanderbilt University's School of Nursing and devoted her life to helping others. His son John Jr. followed in his father's footsteps and became a sales professional in flexible packaging after graduating from Northern Illinois University and settled down in Indianapolis in 1971. A flag flown above USS Indianapolis (CA-35) Memorial in Indianapolis, Indiana was presented to his grandson who bears his name. John's son and daughter were at the Indianapolis CA 35 Memorial in honor of their father. John Jr. surprised his sister visiting to the Memorial and announcing that the flag is flying in their father's honor. She was in town visiting him that week.
