Radioman Second Class Cecil Trotter was born October 7, 1922, in Pickens Mill, Pickens, South Carolina to parents Ernest McDuffett Trotter and Annie Marie Trotter. He had two sisters, Pearline and Neata Bell.
Cecil registered for the draft on June 29, 1942 at Pickens Co., SC. (Please note that on his Registration Card displayed above, Trotter entered his full name at the top as Arthur Cecil Trotter. However, he signed his name at the bottom as Cecil Trotter. He went by his middle name, Cecil. His Full Name is provided on this website bio record to aid a website visitor who would like to research public records in an effort to find more information about Radioman Second Class Trotter.) Cecil enlisted November 7, 1942 at Columbia, SC and noted as V-6. V stood for volunteer and 6 meant General duties and Specialist. The vast majority of enlisted men were part of the US Navy Reserve and joined into one of the available V programs. The following day, November 8, 1942, he arrived at the Naval Training Station at Norfolk, VA for basic training. He entered training as a AS (Apprentice Seaman) but his rating advanced to S2c (Seaman 2nd Class) on January 1, 1943. Upon completing basic training he transferred from Norfolk on February 25, 1943 to the Naval Training Radio School, Keystone Schools, Inc., in Bedford Springs, PA. When he completed radio school on June 22, 1943, his rating advanced to RM3c (Radioman 3rd Class). The next day he transferred to the Receiving Station at the Naval Yard in Washington, DC to await further transfer. It is not known where he was stationed in Washington, DC but he remained there until September 22, 1943 when he was transferred to General Detail Receiving Ship at San Francisco, CA. One month later he transferred to Service Force Administration, Communication Pool where he was received on October 29, 1943. Here, he received an order to report to USS Indianapolis CA-35 and he departed San Francisco. Cecil reported aboard USS Indianapolis CA-35 on November 7, 1943 for service as a RM3c. The Indy Muster Rolls for the quarters ending March, June, September and December 1944 list Cecil’s rating as RM3c. It was not until 5 February, 1945 that Cecil was advanced to the rating of RM2c. A new RM embroidered insignia sewn on his right sleeve would be worn only 5 months before his death. REST WELL YOUNG MAN - WE’VE GOT THE WATCH.
