Clifford enlisted in the Navy October 19, 1942 at Milwaukee, WI and reported to the Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, IL. for basic training. His rate was AS (Apprentice Seaman)
He transferred on December 3, 1942 to Naval Training School (Radio) at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Upon arrival, his rate was S2c.
Clifford went aboard USS Indianapolis CA-35 for duty on April 19, 1943 as a S2c.
The muster roll of Indy shows his rate remained S2c at the end of June 1943.
By January 1944, his rate had advanced to RM3c. He advanced further on September 1, 1944 to RM2c(T). The “T” indicates a temporary rate and was common at this point in the war. It had no bearing on his abilities or qualifications as a RM2c.
Clifford served on board Indy for 2 years and 3 months before his tragic death on July 30, 1945.
He was survived by: wife, LaVerne, and daughter, Julane, both of Franklin, Wisconsin; older brother, Raymond, of Hallandale, Florida; and younger sister, June Ritter, of Ridgewood, New Jersey.
