BOYD, Troy H
Gunner’s Mate Third Class Boyd was born on March 4, 1917 in Whitley County, Kentucky. He married Reva Lovett in 1938. She died in 2001. Their son, Troy Gene Boyd was 2 years old when his dad joined Indianapolis. Troy Gene died in 1984.
At age 23 Troy registered for the draft on October 16, 1940. He enlisted in the Navy July 1943 at age 26 and was sent for basic training to USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois.
He joined Indianapolis October 8, 1943. While aboard USS Indianapolis, Troy, GM 3c, served in the battles of Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Marshall Island and Tinian Island. He was present at the burials-at-sea of the nine crew members who were killed in the Okinawa kamikaze attack on March 31, 1945.
