Roy Edward RHOTEN, F2-Fireman Second Class
RHOTEN, Roy E
Fireman Second Class Rhoten was the second of 14 children born to William Edward Rhoten and Olive Mildred Fox. Roy was born at Modale, Iowa, November 3, 1926. He grew up in Monona and Harrison counties, Iowa and attended school at Blencoe and Magnolia. Roy graduated from Magnolia in May of 1944. During his high school years, Roy farmed.
Project 888In January 1945 Roy was drafted into the service and given his choice of the Army or Navy. Roy chose the Navy since he had an older brother in the Navy at that time. Roy went to Boot Camp at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois from February to the end of April. In May he was shipped to Shoemaker, California, then to USS Indianapolis at Mare Island, California. He went aboard May 12, 1945. From there they made their final voyage in July 1945 when Roy was lost at sea. Roy was only one of the many who gave their life for their country. The Purple Heart was given to his parents posthumously. Also in the Navy were brothers James, Thomas, Lyle, Rex, and Paul. His sisters are Sarah Fitzgerald, Doris Konz, Agnes Hart, Donna Levell, Betty Ball, and Mary Keevan. At the time of the writing of this biography, the following siblings were deceased: Glen, September 29, 1940, age 3, Clara Magnuson, August 19, 1978, and William and Olive had passed away June 15, 1945, and March 22, 1995, respectively. The following photo (left) was taken at the 2018 USS Indianapolis Reunion. Roy’s brother, Thomas is holding a Gold Star Family Sign.
