Fireman First Class McNickle was born on January 16, 1920, in Wheeling, West Virginia. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1943. He attended boot camp at the USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois.
Project 888Arthur received further training in San Francisco, California and from there was shipped to Hawaii and joined the crew of USS Indianapolis on October 31, 1943. He participated in the South Pacific battles until that fateful day, July 30, 1945, when the ship was sunk and he was lost at sea. He was survived by his wife Ruth McNickle Holland, daughter Donna McNickle Warren, grandchildren James P. Warren II and Jamie Warren, and great-grandchildren Tara and Thorn Warren. Sadly missed by his wife and daughter, he received the Purple Heart posthumously. His family lived in Nashville, Tennessee.
