MARTIN, Albert
Seaman Second Class Martin was born October 27, 1917, in Stanton, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Navy on February 25, 1944. He received training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois.
Project 888While serving aboard USS Indianapolis, he saw action in the Marianas Operations, Western Carolina Islands Operation, invasion of Iwo Jima and the assault on Okinawa. On March 31, 1945 during the assault on Okinawa, he witnessed the ship receiving a Japanese kamikaze hit which killed nine crew members. From Okinawa, Indianapolis returned to Mare Island, California for repairs. During the repairs he came home to his wife, Ruth, and their two young sons (C.B. and Danny). A daughter (he never knew about), Carol Jean, was born on February 17, 1946. Albert left home after his leave and returned to active duty on board USS Indianapolis in early July 1945. Years later, post Indianapolis sinking, his family (including one granddaughter, Tamara Sue) all lived in Stanton, Kentucky.
