He entered the service in February 1945 and went aboard the ship at San Jose, California on June 23, 1945.
Five weeks later, Melvin was lost at sea when USS Indianapolis was torpedoed on July 30, 1945 by Japanese submarine I-58 and sank in less than 15 minutes. Whether Melvin made it off the ship and into the water is not known.
His name is inscribed on the Tablets of The Missing in the American Manila Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig, Philippines.
Melvin, you are not forgotten.
