Fireman Second Class Johnston was born in Athens, Pennsylvania on January 17, 1920.
He entered the service in December 1944. He received his recruit training at the Sampson Naval Training Center and additional training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois. He boarded USS Indianapolis on June 23, 1945 (just three weeks prior to the ships departure for its final voyage). He died with the ship’s sinking just 5 weeks after boarding. His survivors include his wife Alice, who died in 1981, and his son, David, who was three at the time and his daughter, Lynne who was just 6 months old. As adults, David lived in Greer, South Carolina and Lynne lived in Savona, New York.
