Lost at Sea Robert Alexander HUGHES
HUGHES, Robert A
Fire Controlman Third Class Hughes was born on December 12, 1905, in New Athens. Ohio. He was inducted into the service June 23, 1943, from Cambridge, OH. He received his training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois and San Diego, California. He went aboard USS Indianapolis CA-35 on April 28, 1944.
Robert participated in the battles of Guam, Saipan, Palau, Leyte, Iwo Jima and the terrible battle of Okinawa. He received the Purple Heart posthumously. He was survived by his widow, Gertrude, who resided in Coca Beach, FL. During his last visit at home, he was very concerned about a possible invasion of Japan and the tremendous toll it could take on our servicemen. The A-bomb answered that.
