Project 888Known as “Jack” by his family and friends, Jack was 19 when he boarded USS Indianapolis October 8, 1943 - the average age of the final sailing crew. (1) Jack was survived by his mother, Myrtle Adair, and his siblings, Albert, Harold, Eva, Alberta, Barbara, Faye, and Vernon. Four other men from Marion County, TN were killed on board Indianapolis on July 30, 1945: Ralph Harris Holloway, S2 Thomas Hardin Jordan, S2 Clifford Cecil Owensby, F2c Aulton Newell Phillips: To keep up morale when away from home, the Navy often assigned men from the same locality together to a ship. These five men all from Marion County, Tennessee is an example. Another example was the assignment of two officers from Knoxville, Tennessee to Indianapolis: LCDR Earl Henry, ship’s dentist, and LCDR Kasey Moore who had known each other for ten years. Both lost their lives July 30, 1945.
