He joined the service in September 1942 at Yakima, Washington and after training, went aboard the USS Indianapolis on October 15, 1942.
His participation in battles included Aleutians, Gilbert Island, Marshall Islands. Tinian, Asiatic-Pacific raids, Marianas, West Caroline, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and all other battles from late 1942 until the ship was sunk by the enemy on July 30, 1945.
His family was told that Hobbs went down with the ship.
Hobbs’ duties on board were with the 3rd Division. He received the following awards: Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver and four bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal and posthumously the Purple Heart.
He was survived by four sisters, Irene Wheeler of Ozark, Missouri; Mildred Watkins of Fresno, California; Moudena Standley of Glendale, Oregon; and Alice Shoultz of Anacortes, Washington. His father, Thomas Hobbs, passed away on December 23, 1973.
