HANSEN, Henry
Seaman Second Class Hansen was born on February 22, 1923, in San Rafael, California.
Hansen entered the service in San Francisco, California in 1942 at the Reception Center in San Diego. He completed basic Training at Farragut Naval Station, Sandpoint, Idaho.
He spent his entire service aboard USS Indianapolis.
He received the following medals: World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal and posthumously the Purple Heart.
When he left home for the last time, he had to walk to the bus depot. When he reached the corner, Henry turned and waved to his mother, father, and his sisters Lillian and Margaret; Margaret feels she had a premonition of his death and wanted to dash to him for the chance to hug him once more.
Hansen was proud of Indianapolis. In his last letter to his sister Lillian, he wrote, “By the way, I participated in the air strike on Tokyo on the 16th and 17th of February 1945 and I participated in the operation of Iwo Jima in February. I am pretty proud of being in on Tokyo.”
Henry was very much missed by his four sisters: Lillian Tooman, Margaret Strausbauch, Ruth Nichols, and Ann Corzine.
