Marine Private First Class Hancock was born on December 23, 1922, in Roanoke, Virginia. He grew up and went to school in Oakland, California. He was the son of Hector and Aileen Hancock.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1942. He came aboard USS Indianapolis in 1944. On June 2, 1945 (just 6 weeks before the ship left San Francisco for its final and tragic voyage), he married Edith Mary Tye in Oakland, CA. At some point in time post sinking, Edith moved to Manteca, CA. Note: Thomas reported aboard Indianapolis in Oct 1944. The exact date is unknown. Patricia Stephens (Admin)
