He enlisted in the Navy February 7, 1945, and left for boot camp training at USNTC (United States Naval Training Center), Great Lakes, Illinois on March 23, 1945.
He was assigned to USS Indianapolis and went aboard on June 23, 1945.
He was lost at sea when Indianapolis was sunk July 30, 1945. He was 18 years, five months, 13 days old at his death. He was survived by his parents and two sisters.
He had one sister who later in her life was still residing at the home place in Syracuse, Missouri. His few letters received after his assignment to Indianapolis were filled with joy and anticipation. He knew something big was happening with his first assignment, but didn’t know what.
